Accelerated Resistance Gene Discovery in Common Bean

Common bean is an important food crop in the US and worldwide as beans are an excellent source of protein, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and vitamins. Unfortunately, bean production is vulnerable to virulent plant pathogens. To expedite the development of dry bean varieties with durable disease resistance, new approaches are needed for rapid R-gene discovery. To overcome past obstacles and inefficiencies limiting positional cloning of R-genes, we are utilizing association genetics and resistance gene enrichment sequencing (AgRenSeq) to characterize pan-genome R-gene variation and to identify functional R-genes in common bean.
